  1. The Save SPSS Portable File dialog box saves
  2. an SPSS portable file, which is a system file
  3. that you can use on other versions of SPSS.
  4.  
  5. It saves files in the current folder which is
  6. identified by the menu title above the
  7. list of files in the dialog box.
  8.  
  9. To save a portable file in the current folder:
  10.  
  11.   1. Type the name of the file into the text
  12.       box.  Use a name that helps you remember
  13.       that this is a portable file.
  14.    
  15.   2. Click the Save button.
  16.  
  17. SAVE vs. PASTE
  18.   Click Save to save the file without entering
  19.   a SAVE command into an input window.
  20.   Alternatively, click PASTE to paste the SAVE
  21.   command into an Input Window.  SPSS 
  22.   automatically selects the SAVE command but
  23.   awaits your instructions before running it.

  25. OVERWRITING A FILE
  26.   If the file name you assign already exists,
  27.   a dialog box asks whether you want to 
  28.   replace the existing file:
  29.  
  30.   • Yes
  31.     Contents of the current file replace
  32.     contents of the original file.
  33.  
  34.   • No
  35.     The file is not saved, and SPSS assumes you
  36.     have changed your mind.
  37.     If you still want to save the file, but
  38.     under a new name, choose Save Data File,
  39.     Portable, again.
  40.     This time assign a unique name to the file.
